Philosophy...
As a director, I believe that a curious nature equates to an imaginative artist: the constant question of "why." When working on a show, the word "why" translate as "intention." This acts as my guide when analyzing a text, working with an actor on a role, or executing a holistic vision for a production. I've found the deeper the "why," the greater are the discoveries that create an in-the-moment truth on stage. Theatre is inherently political. Therefore, I look for material that not only entertains audiences but engages the conversation of ways society could improve and grow.
I like to blend realism with imagination. As such, I want my creative work in the theatre to illuminate the reflective mirror in ourselves and society whilst igniting the imaginative spirit that had once lived in all of us when we were younger. The beauty of imagination is that it transcends cultural boundaries.
In rehearsal, I equally have a plan and want to collaborate with the actors, promoting the actor's intuition, as often an actor can move in a natural way that honors the storytelling. I've found this approach fosters greater ownership from the actor' and their work.
